The use of leather for clothes in prehistory when it was already an important symbol, going beyond its initial function to protect against the cold. Throughout history, leather was attributed the values of virility and strength. Many on-trend leather tops actually form part of the technical and military wardrobe: bomber jacket, aviator jacket... Then it was also adopted by the music realm with the advent of rock 'n' roll.
The appearance of leather varies depending on the animal from which the hide is obtained, the quality of the hide or the tanning technique (process which makes the leather more durable). Vegetal tanning, for example, results in a leather with a more uneven and matte appearance than chrome-tanned leather generally used for jackets. Sanding will give a suede or nubuck leather. It is a high-quality material which requires numerous processes and specialised know-how.
Leather is sensitive to environmental elements (water, dust) and should be regularly cared for to increase its lifespan. Regardless of the garment (shoes or jackets), the first thing to do is to waterproof it to avoid unsightly marks left by heavy showers.
Then, regular care varies depending on the type of garment. For a leather jacket, machine-washing is evidently not an option. If the leather is stained despite being waterproofed, bring the piece to a leather specialist. Regularly dust leather with a soft cloth to avoid dust becoming embedded if the jacket is not used. You can nourish leather with specialised milks. Body milks for babies also work well.
It should be noted that waxes and milks should not be used for suede leather. Simply remove dust with a soft brush.
When you are not using your jacket, hang it on a wide hanger to avoid deforming the shape and leave it in the fresh air or in a breathable cover (not in plastic).
As for shoes, we strongly recommend placing shoe trees inside to maintain the original shape. Simply use a soft cloth (with a little water if there are stains) to remove dust. Then, a nourishing milk for leather (once a week is enough) will avoid drying and cracking. Finish with a brush to shine. Polishing is not necessary as it tends to prevent the leather from breathing and dries it out in the long term. If you still want to do so, use a very small knob of polish!
For suede or nubuck shoes, use a simple brush (in brass for suede, in crêpe for nubuck) to remove dust and a special cleaner if there are stains.
