Oxford Cotton

Oxford Cotton

Description

There are various stories about the origin of this very common shirt fabric. The most famous tells how a Scottish draper was hired to design a fabric for the most well-known universities, including Oxford, after which it was finally named. After gradually becoming an essential part of preppy style, it was adopted by polo players in the 1930s and became a classic for those wanting to compromise between casual and dressy style. Its typical finish - a chequerboard effect created due to use of a coloured weft thread and white warp thread - and its course feel add elegant texture to an outfit. The Oxford shirt traditionally features a button-down collar, sometimes with a button in the middle of the collar at the back, initially added to avoid the collar of polo players lifting.

Care

While very easy to care for, Oxford shirts will not wear well if washed at high temperatures, like all cotton shirts. Wash at a maximum of 30°C and avoid tumble-drying. Tip: dry the shirt on a hanger to make ironing easier.
